The Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs says it has awarded contracts for the construction of 360 units of three and two bedroom houses in the nine states that make up the Niger Delta. The houses are to be completed within three months.
The Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Chief Ufot Ekaette, disclosed this when members of the Akwa Ibom State Community in the Federal Capital Territory paid him a visit in his office, yesterday.
The Minister said that the ministry had also awarded three shoreline protection contracts in Effiat Mbo in Akwa IBom State, Kurutie in Delta State and Ikuru Town in Rivers State as part of its environmental remediation programme.
According to Ekaette, more land reclamation projects are to be undertaken in 2010 while the Ministry has begun the survey of eleven oil-impacted sites in the Niger Delta with a view to adopting appropriate technology to clean them up for the use of the inhabitants.
The President of the Akwa Ibom Community in the Federal Capital Territory, Eng. Ben Ukpong called on the Federal Government to examine all reports on the Niger Delta and priortise them for the development of the region.
Eng. Ukpong suggested the adoption of the model used in developing Abuja to fast-track the development of the Niger Delta region.
He commended the Minister for the steps he has so far taken to develop the Niger Delta but called for adequate funding for the Ministry's projects to enable it to impact positively on the lives of the people.
