State Government Plans Retreat for Ex-Militants

In an effort to assist in the Federal government's rehabilitation plan for former militants who embraced the amnesty, Akwa Ibom State government has approved a one day retreat for them next month.

The State Commissioner for Information and Social-Reorientation, Mr. Aniekan Umanah, who announced this at a post state executive meeting yesterday said during the period, names of those who may wish to be trained will be collated to fill the 155 slots made available by the State Government for the exercise.

Shedding lights on the State Executive deliberations, the Commissioner said, the Council frowned at the problem of indiscriminate MOUs agreement and contracts entered into by various ministries in the past which has impacted negatively on government finances.

Accordingly, he said government has directed that henceforth no MOU agreement or contracts should be signed or executed by any Ministry without the prior approval of the State Ministry of Justice.

“The intention of Government is to curtail the arbitrariness which led to several litigations against government”, he stressed, adding that a committee is to be constituted to review and sanction officers of government (serving or retired) found culpable.

The image maker of the state hinted that the state government has equally directed the immediate blacklisting of contractors who collected monies from the former state administration, but failed to execute such contracts at the state College of Agriculture, Obio Akpa.

Umanah said the Attorney General of the State has been asked to drag to court such contractors and any member of the management of the institution also found culpable in the mismanagement of the N70 million released to the College.
The State government, he further said, has also constituted a five-man committee to probe illegal employment at the defunct College of Agriculture and should review, verify and determine approved staff of the college with the report submitted within one month.

The committee is to be chaired by the Special Adviser, Public Service Matters, Mr. Sunny Akpadiaha, with the Special Adviser, Labour and Productivity, Comrade Udo Kerian Akpan; the Commi-ssioner for Education, Dr. Nseabasi Akpan; the Commi-ssioner for Health, Dr. Louisa Ukpe and the Commissioner for Economic Development, Godwill Umoh as members.

Considering the understanding and cooperation shown by Judiciary Union Workers in the state by calling off their strike, the State Executive Council approved the payment of the suspended salaries, pending the final negotiations.

In order to boast agricultural and human capital development and further empower the citizens, the Council approved the release of the sum of N650m for the commencement of 2010 Integrated Farmers Scheme programme.Under this scheme, 930 youths drawn from the 31 Local Government Areas of the State will be trained and empowered with the sum of N500, 000 each for various agricultural ventures.
